Jessica Sena Comes Home a Champ!

Jessica Sena of Choteau competed in the first ever Montana State Games in Bozeman on Saturday and came home champion in her class.  The Montana State Games is a CrossFit competition based on the CrossFit Games which is held each year in Aromas, California.   The CrossFit competitions are, according to CrossFit's founder and CEO Greg Glassman, "a competition designed to test constantly varied high intensity functional movement".  The competitors compete for "who is fittest", which is based on the "empirical return on who it is that has the greatest work capacity across broad time and modal domains".

Ms. Sena competed against five other women in the "C" scaled competition.   There were two events performed by all athletes, designed to test the combination of cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, speed, power, coordination, accuracy, balance and agility.  After the first event, Sena was in third place.  After taking first place in the second event by a wide margin, she stated "I kicked it into high gear, although I don't know where that gear came from...I just kept going and never stopped."    Her combined times from the two events earned her the championship.

Bridger CrossFit, a training facility located in Bozeman, organized the Games and created scaled classes for competitors to "allow people with very little, if any, CrossFit experience to get a taste of the Sport of Fitness."  Jenna Rettenmayer stated that part of the idea of the Games was to create a "community event and (that) is designed to bring CrossFit Athletes together from across the state of Montana so that we can celebrate the sport we love."

Ms. Sena was the sole competitor from the north central Montana area, as most of the athletes were based in Missoula, Billings and Bozeman.   She was sponsored by Grizzly Sports and ONDEG Fitness, and Perry Breen and Matt Hensley comprised her support team.

CrossFit is "constantly varied functional exercises performed at high intensity".  Currently in Choteau there are more than two dozen athletes training using the CrossFit method under the direction of Paul Dreyer, a CrossFit Level I trainer.  Dreyer is also assisting the Choteau High School Girls Volleyball team with their conditioning.  During the Montana State Games Dreyer acted as one of the six judges for the events.
