A Cursory Look at School Lunch Menus

As I was looking over the Choteau Public School's November activity calendar, I paid some attention to the breakfast and lunch menus.  By no means is my analysis scientific...however, my initial judgment is that the menus (breakfast more so than lunch) are "caloric-ly" over-loaded with carbohydrates, particularly grains, fruits and dairy, and roughly 20% of the breakfasts have no protein.  Not to mention the fact that EVERY breakfast contained gluten.
  • Does it appear there is an appropriate percentage of calories from each macro-nutrient (protein, carbohydrate, fat)?
  • Should we be concerned with the number of calories from each macro-nutrient that are consumed by school children?
  • Is gluten bad for everyone, or only those who are "gluten intolerant"?
  • What's the school's criteria for a "healthy meal"?
  • How can you find out more about the school's menus?
On the subject of gluten...if you think you ARE NOT gluten intolerant (in other words, you can eat all the gluten you want with no ill effects), try going without it for a week.  (This means no wheat, rye or barley...and that includes the products that are likely to contain them such as oats, cereals, popsicles, some malt, soy sauce, natural flavorings, et al.)   See if you notice any changes in how you look, how you feel and how you perform.  It's made a HUGE difference in my life to go gluten-free...I dare you to try it.
