Nutrition Tip of the Day:
  • Treats:  It depends on your definition of "paleo".
Daily Pondering / Question of the Day:
  • The ONDEG "paleo challenge" has begun.  What exactly does "paleo challenge" mean?  Well, it means different things to different people...so here's my take on it.  If you look up the word (it's actually a prefix, although in the common vernacular, it is often used as a word), it is defined as "ancient", "early", "old" or "primitive".  If you want to get down into the weeds of why "paleo" instead of "primitive" or some other descriptive, I'll leave that to the experts who are much smarter than I.  When I think "paleo", I think "caveman".  Now you may be a creationist as opposed to an evolutionist , and hence, caveman does not register for you as part of the human ancestry.  That's ok, just think Adam and Eve instead.  It doesn't matter if it's Grok the Caveman , or Adam and Eve...neither one had Rex's Market, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, or a frying pan.  They didn't have access to refined sugars or genetically modified plant structures.  They only had what their creator (Creator?) had given them to survive.  How extreme you make the correlation is up to you.  Personally, I'm trying to cut out all the "processing".  I know that "processing" is subject to interpretation as well.  For example, peanuts are processed into my beloved Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (RPBC), so I have to cut out the RPBC.  Cattle are processed into my beloved New York strip steaks, so should I cut them out too?  The distinction is that Grok did a bit of processing as well...he had to process the woolly mammoth he just took down with his spear so he could eat it.  I don't know if Adam and Eve ate the animals, but I suspect they did.  They too, had to do a bit of processing I'm sure, but Adam didn't have a Traeger grill and Eve didn't have a KitchenAid.  Whatever frame of reference you have, there is certain degree of processing in everything we eat...you just have to decide how much you are willing to accept.  That's where I'm forming MY baseline.  If I can perform the processing myself, then that's my standard.  As an initial step, I've taken inventory of my pantry to find out how much "processed" food I currently possess.  I figure if I'm gonna change my eating habits, I gotta start by changing my shopping habits.  More on this next time...
